Lionel Messi might perhaps return to Barcelona in the summer, according to Mateu Alemany, Barcelona's director of football.
Given that his current contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires in June, the Argentina captain may leave the club at the end of the current campaign.
Before the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal matchup against Real Madrid at the Camp Nou, Alemany told Movistar+, "We do our thing, Leo does his thing, and you never know [what happens] in the future."
After being questioned by TVE before to the Clasico about the prospect of Messi joining the Blaugrana, Alemany was also circumspect.
"On this subject, I have nothing to say," he said.
Messi is a Barcelona living legend. He is the greatest football player ever. It is undeniable that he is well respected within this group. He is competing for titles at PSG, while we are competing for ours. We'll have to wait and see what transpires.
Alemany, meanwhile, refuted claims that the team is looking for sponsorships to pay Messi's wage should he decide to return.
In that regard, he replied, "We are not doing anything at the time.
Messi's name is chanted at Camp Nou versus Real Madrid.
In the 10th minute of the match against Real Madrid, supporters at Camp Nou Spotify paid respect to the former Barcelona captain by screaming his name.
They made this gesture when reports of talks between the two parties circulated.
