Marley practiced Rastafarianism.
In 1977, a melanoma in his toe received a diagnosis. Marley, a devoted Rastafarian, was urged by doctors to have the toe removed. He objected on the grounds that it went against his Rastafarian beliefs and might interfere with his performance. A few years later, his brain was affected as well. 1981 marked his death.
By amputating the toe, doctors may have halted the spread of the malignancy. Marley, however, refused and chose a less drastic course of action. The Old Testament passage in Leviticus 21:5 and the Torah serve as the foundation for Rastafarian doctrine. "They shall not make any incisions in their flesh, nor shall they make any baldness upon their heads, nor shall they shave off the corner of their beard."
Therefore, despite the fact that his death might have been avoided, Marley went to his grave upholding his moral principles.
Bob Marley agreed to have the nail and nail bed removed rather than having the toe amputated, and despite being sick, he resumed his world tour in 1980 after the release of his twelfth studio album, "Uprising," on June 10, 1980.
Marley performed at Madison Square Garden in New York as part of "The Uprising Tour," and after collapsing while out jogging in Central Park, he was taken to the hospital. There, it was discovered that a skin graft had failed to stop the disease from spreading throughout his body, and that he had cancer in his brain, lungs, and liver.
HIS LAST WORD WAS "MONEY CAN'T BUY LIFE"
The remainder of the tour was canceled after the legendary musician's health rapidly declined shortly after learning that his body was covered in cancer. In Bavaria, Germany, Bob Marley opted to undertake the Issels treatment, an alternative cancer therapy that is based on a strict diet that forbids the use of certain foods, beverages, and other substances.
Bob Marley boarded a plane to travel to his home in Jamaica after learning that the recommended approach had been unsuccessful in treating his severe cancer for eight months in a row. His vital signs unexpectedly deteriorated throughout the journey, forcing him to land in Maimi, Florida so that he could be brought to the hospital.
After receiving immediate medical care, Marley's body was unable to withstand much longer, and on May 11, 1981, he passed away at the age of 36 in Caders of Lebanon Hospital. His closing statements once again demonstrated what a wonderful person he was right up till the very end of his life and how he persevered with his beliefs despite the challenging circumstances in his career. Just before he died, he told his son Ziggy that "money can't purchase life."
